This is for those who love the colour red - vibrant, bright, scarlet-red! It was inspired by an intriguing story I came across while researching the colourful flowers that the Australian Light Horsemen came across as they entered the Holy Land. You never do know what you might find when you go researching! Here is my version…

Once upon a time, there lived a handsome prince who invited all the eligible young ladies in his kingdom to a grand ball, to choose for himself a wife. Three sisters Anemone, Ranunculus and Poppy each busied herself preparing for the great event, and deciding not to be influenced by each other they each went shopping separately for their own special dress. Anemone chose a beautiful bright red dress, Ranunculus chose a scarlet satin dress that reflected off a contrasting green underskirt, and Poppy chose a gorgeous gown of brilliant red. They returned home to compare their purchases, and to their dismay they saw that they had all chosen the same colour dress, though each with subtle differences in texture and style.
Knowing that men are not always that observant regarding style, they decided that they would each add unique accessories to their dress so that the prince could easily distinguish between them as well as to enhance their individual beauty. This time they went shopping together! Anemone chose a beautiful pure white scarf, and to adorn her dark hair she chose a metallic blue-black coronet. She looked gorgeous! Ranunculus chose a velvet golden-green and black turban to match her green underskirt, it contrasted beautifully with her scarlet red dress and reflected its red glow. She looked absolutely stunning! Poppy chose a glossy black bead necklace with a delicate white trim, and a coronet of golden yellow with a touch of black to adorn her hair. She looked magnificent! Thus attired, they attended the ball along with hundreds of other beautiful young ladies.
The three sisters in red caught the eye of the prince immediately! He could not keep his gaze from them, and spent the entire evening with them. He requested that he spend a whole day with each one of the three sisters separately, and they were each happy to comply. However, after a delightful day spent with each of them, the prince still could not choose between them, for they were each equally lovely!
The three sisters were all captivated by the prince’s charms, and each wanted him for herself; so they conferred together, and came up with a brilliant solution which would please them all. The prince should marry all three of them! -providing that he spend a whole month separately and exclusively with each sister, every year. The Prince in love with them all, quickly agreed, but asked the sisters to always wear their special attire to avoid unnecessary embarrassment.
Since then, every year, Anemone is the first to bloom in winter, with white around the base of her petals and metallic blue-black stamens; Ranunculus appears in early Spring with green sepals below her petals and a matching turban of greenish stamens; and Poppy flowers in late Spring to early Summer, with dark spots on the base of her petals and gold and black stamens.

So now you can distinguish the difference between an anemone, a ranunculus and a poppy!
